Today we met with a state biologist. We discussed our goals for the property: dispersed camping (aesthetics), habitat protection (deer, trout, turkeys, bear, etc), and finally: financing the campsites.
I learned far more than I was expecting! We discussed how to “read” the trees; learning what trees to harvest and what to leave. We discussed the various habitats and how to best maintain and protect them. We also discussed stream crossings, how to install them while protecting the streams.
At the end of the visit, I felt far better prepared to discuss my plans for the land with my forester. Whom I’m meeting with in just a few days. We enjoyed a delicious steak lunch over the fire and packed up to head home.
